Melvin William Mayer was born in Lodi California to Hannah and Walter Mayer on April 29, 1939. He passed away on December 28, 2020 after a long battle with a rare form of T-Cell Cutaneous Mycosis Fungoides Leukemia and Pulmonary Fibrosis. Melvin was the eldest of three, Beverly Harrigan and Jerry Mayer. He was raised in Lodi and began working at the age of 9 years old delivering groceries for a local market. He also worked at the State Theatre, Lodi Theatre and the Sunset Theatre. He worked in the local fields and local packing sheds while going to high school. He graduated in the Class of 1958 at Lodi Union High School and enlisted in the United Stated Navy where he proudly served his country. After being discharged from the Navy, he returned home to Lodi where he began working for PG&E as a ditch digger and throughout the years, he climbed the ladder and ended a 49 -year career with PG&E being a Supervisor in accident prevention at substations. Melvin met the love of his life, Susan McClelland in 1960 and the two married in 1964. They adopted their two daughters, Brenda Mayer in 1968 and Kristine Mayer-Green in 1967 giving them both a life that he never had. His three grandchildren, Anthony, Klaire and Shawn were the light of his life. Travelling to Disneyland with his family and trips to the coast were some of his favorite past times. Melvin loved to do anything artistic things like making bowls, chess/checker tables and wire trees. He also liked to tinker on things and play with his cat, Merlot. Melvin was proceeded in death by his father, Walter Mayer, his mother, Hannah Dykstra, his step - father, David Dykstra, brother, Jerry Mayer, sister, Beverly Harrigan, brother-in-law, Jim Harrigan, nephew, Patrick Harrigan, great nephew, Jerod Harrigan. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 year, Susan Mayer, Daughters, Brenda Mayer, Kristine Mayer-Green and Thomas Green, three grandchildren, Anthony Mayer, Klaire Green and Shawn Green(Michelle). He is also survived by Brother-in-law Carl McClelland and his wife Bernie, niece, Karen Hemsley and her husband Scott, sister-in-law Shirley Hoyt, niece Tracy Partridge nephew Thomas McClelland. He will also be greatly missed by his cats, Merlot, Fergie and Miss Kitty. Private services will be held at a later date due to COVID restrictions. In lieu of flowers, cards can be mailed to Sue Mayer at P.O. Box 1167 Woodbridge, California 95258. Donations can be made to the following two charities in his name: Sacramento Shriners Hospital for Children or UC Davis Cancer Research Center.
