John "Jack" Nunes

Obituary of John "Jack" Perry Nunes

Please share a memory of John "Jack" to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

John “Jack” Nunes passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side, after an extended battle with cancer.  Jack won the fight when Jesus Christ took him to his true home on June 29, 2024.  Jack was born on October 7, 1947 in New Bedford, Massachusetts to Joao Nunes, an immigrant from Madeira Island Portugal, and Mary Nunes a New Bedford resident.

After attending Boston Conservatory School of Music, Jack moved to New Mexico, where he earned a Masters in Administration and Education.  He taught school for several years in New Mexico, before becoming a district manager with Mac Tools, and moving to Washington State.  Jack met his wife Betty in Washington, and they were married on April 4, 1987 at Immaculate Conception Church, in Lihue, Hawaii. The couple moved to California in 1988, where Jack pursued a career in teaching with Sacramento City Unified School District for 21 years.  Jack taught math at Fern Bacon Middle School, and it was truly a passion for him. After retiring in 2009, Jack enjoyed teaching math to adults at Heald Business College for several years.

Jack was a parishioner of St. Joachim Catholic church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He lived his faith quietly, with actions and a deep love for helping people in need.  Jack delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years once he retired.

Jack enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. He adored pets, especially his beloved kitties.  He loved Hawaii, particularly Kauai, and was blessed to vacation there many times.  Jack also enjoyed spending hours in his woodshop, crafting beautiful pieces.  He loved telling jokes and getting people to laugh, and winning at countless games of scrabble.  Jack had a loyal heart, and maintained many life-long relationships with childhood friends.  He also enjoyed frequent lunches with his ROMEO Group (Retired Old Men Eating Out).

Jack is survived by his wife Betty, his children Desiree Beckett, and Jon (Jenny) Nunes, and grandsons Tiiler Nunes and Liam Beckett.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Faye and Esther, and a brother who died at birth.
