Fred Lincoln Muther, 80, of Lodi, passed away at a local rehabilitation hospital, on May 27, 2003 following a long illness. A native of San Francisco, born on February 12, 1923, Fred grew up in the City by the Bay. He attended local schools and graduated from Galileo High School, Class of 1941. After high school, he attended University of California at Davis, studying viniculture. When WWII broke out, Fred was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Signal Corps, assigned to the 1712 Signal Battalion as a radio operator in the South Pacific, China, Burma and India. He ascended to the rank of Sergeant and received numerous military decorations for his service to this nation. After the war, Fred went to work with his father in the family business, Muther Wine Company in San Helena. In 1950, Fred moved to Lodi and worked for HQM, Inc., a wholesale beverage distributor, where he became a manager. Shortly thereafter, in 1952, he purchased the company, which he renamed FM Distributing Company, which he owned and operated for 29 years. On November 23, 1952, he married the love of his life, Margaret A. Felten at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Lodi. Fred was a successful businessman, a devoted family man and a remarkable community leader. He served in the City of Lodi Planning Commission for 15 years. He was a 50-year member of American Legion Lodi Post 22, being Post Commander in 1965; member of International Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) # 259; China Burma India Veterans Association (CBI VA); San Joaquin Valley Swiss Club; Past President of Kiwanis Club; 18-year member, Travel Chairman and Past President of SIRS (Sons In Retirement). He enjoyed fishing, pinochle and being with his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Margaret A. Muther of Lodi; three daughters, Laura Mecca, Monique Muther and Heidi Muther; and Son-in-law Sterling Mecca. Friend are invited to join in a Celebration of Life Service at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 31, 2003 at Lodi Funeral Home, 725 S. Fairmont Avenue in Lodi. Reverend Monsignor John Armstead of Annunciation Cathedral in Stockton, officiation. Committal will be private. Interment will be at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi.
