Obituary of Dominic Victor Sumner
Dominic Sumner – a former US Army soldier and MMA fighter – passed away on Jul 27, 2023, at the young age of 31. A complex and thought-provoking man, he also lived a colorful life; a life of smiles, laughs and antics.
Dom was born in Bangkok, Thailand and moved to Sacramento, California in 2005. After graduating from Galt High School, Dom enlisted in the army and was deployed to Afghanistan for 2 years. His 4-year stint in the army ended with an honorable discharge.
Dom then applied his time pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nutrition whilst at the same time chasing his MMA career. Dom never had an easy fight, his opponents were often above his weight class, but he never gave up and continued his quest for glory in the octagon. His last fight ended with him snatching victory from his opponent. Perhaps this was his defining trait - his legacy. Dom was resilient, raw, and never shied away from adversity.
Surviving are his father and stepmother, Roy and Laura Sumner, his mother Diane Reilly, siblings Lin, Jack, Jasper, Anthony, Albert, and Kevin Sumner, and siblings, Ian, Chris, Stephanie, Micah, Carey, Robin and Jennifer Johnson.
Dominic’s public burial ceremony will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023, at 2:30 pm at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery at 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620, with military honors to pay tribute to his service to the nation. His family will hold a private Celebration of Life at a later time to celebrate and mourn together in peace.
