Obituary of Goldie Lewis

Goldie (Malamato) Lewis, 99, of Acampo, died on May 24, 2006 at a local convalescent hospital. She was born Malamato Vasiliou, March 21, 1907 in Kondakaika Island, Samos, Greece. She came to Cuba in March of 1929, where she married George Lewis. The marriage was prearranged by the families in Greece. After the marriage, they took a boat from Cuba to New Orleans, then took a train from New Orleans to Acampo where George Lewis had a farm. She was a homemaker for a few years. In 1934, they started a fruit stand on Highway 99. There she and her husband, and later family, operated the stand seasonally until 1954. She also liked to bake Greek sweets which she would sell at various locations in Lodi and donate the money to church groups. Her work tools were a rolling pin for her baking and a short-handled hoe for her gardening and yard which she kept weed-free. She also was a caring person and would give a helping hand to newly-arrived Greek families in the area. She was a member of St.Basil Greek Orthodox Church and St. Basil Philoptochos Society in Stockton. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in law, Leo and Vasiliki Lewis of Acampo and Billy and Dimitra Lewis of Lodi; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, one sister, Helen Papavasiliou and five brothers, George, Dimitri, Angelo, Manuel and Elias Vasiliou. Friends are invited to visit Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Lodi Funeral Home. The Trisagion will be held Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Chapel services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Lodi Funeral Home. Committal will immediately follow.
