Obituary of Dorothy Mae Bailey

Mrs. Dorothy Mae Bailey, 91, entered into rest at her home on Tuesday, May 16, 2006. Born in Chicago, Ilinois, on October 25, 1914, to Orville E. and Laura May Cummings Fox. She met her sweetheart, Maury, at church and they were married by his father, Maurice Bailey, Sr., in Chicago on September 1, 1938. And they said it wouldn't last ... for 67 years! In July of 1943 the couple was blessed with the birth of their daughter Barbara, and in 1950 they adopted daughter Deena For most of her adult life she was the bookkeeper for the family business, Bailey's Nursery, Inc., until it was sold in 1971, after which she and Maury traveled extensively and enjoyed their busy retirement. She was an active member of English Oaks Seventh-Day Adventist Church, having served as assistant treasurer and organized the church's Community Services for many years. Dorothy was the consummate letter writer, and would never let an opportunity to compliment and uplift one's spirits with a beautiful card and note get away. Her sweet, upbeat outlook on life was an inspiration to all who had the privilege to know her. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Barbara Bailey Winn; brothers Earle, Everett, and Roy Fox; sisters-in-law Ruth Mallernee, Eileen Fox, and Dagny Fox; and niece Linda Fox. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Maury Bailey; daughter, Deena Kirby; and nephews Erwin Mallernee, Ivan Mallernee, and Donald Fox, and their families. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 19th, at 1:00pm at Cherokee Memorial Park, corner of Highway 99 and Harney Lane, in Lodi. At Dorothy's request, there will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of San Joaquin. Lodi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
