Obituary of Bobby Eugene Russell

Please share a memory of Bobby to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bobby Eugene Russell, who passed away April 8, 2006 peacefully, was born December 10, 1927 in Los Angeles, CA to Margaret (Cahoon) of Missouri and Homer Russell of Oklahoma. The family relocated to the Fruitland area outside of Atwater in Merced County, CA where they owned an almond ranch and grape vineyard. Bob graduated from Livingston High School in 1945 where he excelled as a leader in student government, theater and sports. Bob served in the United States Army (1945-1946) in Yokahama, Japan as a sergeant. In 1947, Bob married his high school sweetheart Rebecca (Cooper), whom he had begun "pestering" when she was in 8th grade. Becky's baby sister, Barbara (Cooper) Spratling, remembers him as a lifelong brother who always included her. Continuing his affinity for leadership, Bob entered the grocery business in Merced. He later found his calling in the Retail Clerks International AFL/CIO and Retail Clerks Union of Northern California, serving 30 years. He held a variety of leadership positions and was fiercely passionate about empowering workers. After retiring, Bob and Becky relocated to Lodi, CA where Bob became a gentleman farmer, growing cherries, and other produce that always made its way in abundance to the homes of his family and friends. Bob never forgot his roots as a farmer and loved the land. Bob resumed his high school passion for golf and participated successfully in many tournaments. An avid dancer, he and Becky became active in square dancing with the Lodi Promenaders and the Jackson Claim Jumpers. They served in leadership with the California State Council Square Dance Association. Married 59 years (and together for almost 65 years with the love of his life, Becky) Bob's wife, family and friends were his life. To the end, they surrounded, supported and loved him. Bob is not only survived by his beloved wife, Becky of Lodi, but three children; Donna (Arnie) Russell-Snyder of Oakland, John (Pattee) Russell-Curry of Merced and Robert (Laura) Russell of Fremont; six grandchildren, Laurieann, Jason, Jacob, Spenser, Jesse and Keddy; three great-grandchildren, Rowan, Angela and Daniel; two sisters, Janice (David) Shawles and Rolinda (Darrell) Kraft, both of Marysville. He was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Russell and sister, JoAnn Walker. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church in Lodi on Wednesday, April 12th at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. David S. Hill officiating. There is no visitation, and graveside services are private. Memorial remembrances may be made to Grace Presbyterian Church, 10 N. Mills Avenue, Lodi, CA 95242 or charity of donor's choice.
