John G. Pitta of Thornton passed away in Galt on September 30, 2004 at the age of 95. Mr. Pitta was born in Madeira, Portugal on October 10, 1908. He came to the United States in 1936, settling in Thornton. He was a tomato and asparagus farmer for over 55 years in Thornton. He enjoyed Portuguese events as well as hunting. John was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Society of Thornton and A.P.U.M.E.C.. He was also a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, attending Mater Ecclesia Church in Thornton. Mr. Pitta is survived by his children; Manuel and wife, Maria Pitta of Thornton; Maria and husband, Joe Pitta of Union City, Angela Andrade of San Leandro, Isabel de Jesus of Union City and Laura and husband, Joe Pereira of Galt; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Pitta ; granddaughter, Mary Davis; great-grandson, Daniel Garza and brother Manuel Pita. Friends may visit on Monday from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 on Monday at Lodi Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:00 AM on Tuesday at Mater Ecclesia Church in Thornton. Committal will immediately follow at Cherokee Memorial Park.
