Mr. Joseph J. Schumacher, a resident of Lodi for over 36 years, passed away in Lodi on September 1, 2004 at the age of 82. Mr. Schumacher was born in Napoleon, N.D. on February 4, 1922 to Joseph and Kathryn Schumacher. In North Dakota he was a rancher and farmer as well as owning a bar in Napoleon. He married Betty Marquart on April 14, 1967. They moved to Lodi in 1968. He was a heavy equipment operator for over 30 years, working for Don Wortley Heavy Equipment. He enjoyed gardening and playing the accordion. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Betty Schumacher of Lodi; sons, Terry Hilzendeger and Jeffrey Hilzendeger of Lodi; daughters, Roxane Gruneich and Connie Schumacher of Lodi; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-granddaughters; sisters, Maggie Matson and Eva Wolf of Bismarck, ND and Clara Hilla of Michigan. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 4 brothers, Pete, Sebastian, Frank and Andrew Schumacher. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Cherokee Memorial Park with Deacon Porfi Cisneros of St. Anne's Church as officiant. Visitation will begin on Saturday from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM continuing on Sunday and Monday from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM at Lodi Funeral Home.
