Obituary of Anthony Joseph "Tony" Bettencourt

Mr. Bettencourt of Lodi, formerly of Galt, passed away in Lodi at the age of 87 on April 19, 2004. Mr. Bettencourt was born in Arroyo Grande, CA on October 18, 1916 to Aniceto and Isabel Flores Bettencourt who were both born in the Azores. Mr. Bettencourt served in US Marine Corps during WWII. He moved to the Galt area from Dixon. He had been a dairyman for 12 years in these areas. He later was a truck driver for 5 years. He later worked as a maintenance supervisor for Galt Elementary School District, retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. Christopher's Catholic Church for many years, and most recently, St. Anne's Catholic Church, when he moved to Lodi. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and playing his harmonica, but most importantly, his great love was his family, particularly his grandchildren. He is survived by his children; Don and wife, Susan Bettencourt of Lodi, Ron and wife, April Bettencourt of Lodi and Trina and husband, Jim Miller of Galt; son-in-law, Fred Maciel; 8 grandchildren, Tamara Bannan, Walter Maciel, Trisha Maciel, Brooke Bettencourt, Shannon Stephens, Tessa Grimm, Delaney Bettencourt and Christopher Miller; 4 great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Stephens, Nathan & Joshua Grimm and Maxwell Bannan; brother, Joe Bettencourt of Washington and sister, Mabel Ladino of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lorraine Bettencourt; daughter Tonya Maciel; brother, Manuel Bettencourt and sister Mary Reis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 1:00 PM at St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Galt by Msgnr. Albert O'Conner of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Elk Grove. Committal will follow at the Galt-Arno Cemetery. A recitation of the Rosary will take place on Thursday at 7:30 at Galt Funeral Home, 702 B Street. Visitation will be at Galt Funeral Home on Thursday from 8:00 AM until 7:30 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM until 12 noon. Memorial contributions-charity of choice.
