Mary Ascension Barela of Acampo passed away in Lodi at the age of 72 on March 23, 2004. Mrs. Barela was born in Delano, California on May 14, 1931. She married Juan Barela in 1949, and they moved to the Lodi area in 1959. She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading, taking walks, crocheting and cooking. She is survived by her children; Tomas Barela of Lodi, Theresa Barela of Lodi, Paulina Pack of PA, Juanita Horst of Oregon, Hope Hoover of Tracy and Susie Barela of Lodi.; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Martha Diaz of Los Angeles; brothers, Manuel Cornejo of Florida, Benito Cornejo of Galt, Joe Cornejo of Los Angeles and Mack Cornejo of Los Angeles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan Barela; sister, Pat Barela; brother, Chris Barela. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church. Recitation of the Rosary will be on Thursday at Lodi Funeral Home Chapel at 4:00 PM with Deacon Porfi Cisneros officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at St. Anne's Catholic Church with Father Alfred Alexander as Celebrant. Committal will follow at Lodi Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM at Lodi Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauegard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311.
