Obituary of Martinha Fernandes

Martinha Fernandes, 96, of Stockton and formerly of Lodi, died November 17 of natural causes in her home. She was born Martinha Sousa on March 9, 1907, in Cinco Ribeiras, Terceira, Azores, where she was reared. Mrs. Fernandes married Manuel Fernandes on February 7, 1934. The couple moved to Modesto in 1966, and settled in Lodi in 1967. She moved to Stockton in 1997 to be near her daughter. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Lodi, Presentation Catholic Church in Stockton, and Our Lady of Fatima Society in Thornton. She is survived by her sons Luis Fernandes, of Stockton, Amaro Fernandes, of Turlock, Fernando Aviz, of Hilmar, and Severiano Fernandes, of Lodi; daughter Maria Magina, of Stockton; brothers Manuel Sousa, of Turlock, and Severiano Sousa, of Modesto; 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Fernandes in 1980; son, Joe Fernandes; and numerous siblings. There will be a Recitation of the Holy Rosary and vigil at 7 p.m. Sunday at Lodi Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Anne's Catholic Church, with Father Eduino Silveira officiating. Committal will be at Cherokee Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 8 a.m. until service time on Monday.
